New change of plans! My idea was to spend a couple of nights in the coastal town of Huanchaco to visit the ruins of Chan Chan and keep heading south... until I arrived yesterday and found out it was a surfer's paradise! After years willing to try, I finally had my first contact with the board... and I managed to stand at my first try!
After that encouraging start, I decided to stay a few days and take more classes with my super instructor John, (ex-champion of Peru and brother of the current national champion). Dressed with the wet-suit and that mega-board under your arm, you automatically feel like a potential beach-boy... until the locals will get you back to reality and humility in the first wave!
The bonefire at the beach that we organised in the evening with some locals and the international group of backpackers from the hostel gave it the final touch of summer holidays…

I have finally visited the ruins of Chan Chan this morning and I loved them. It was the capital of the empire Chimú (prior to the Incas) and it is the largest clay city in Latin America, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. Out of the nine citadels, the complex of Nik An is the only available for visits, trying to reconstruct what it was, but the city is huge and only that example is already impressive.

After my second surf class, I remained at the beach, enjoying the sunset with the fishermen coming back on their “caballitos de totora” (traditional boats) and the professional surfers on the waves…
