There's nothing like discovering a place with a local friend, but in the case of Montevideo is even more necessary, considering how widespread is the city!
I had an amazing cicerone, my friend Emilano, who was already waiting for me at the bus station to take me to a family barbecue at his parents’ place... and that lunch was only the appetizer of an authentic immersion in the Uruguayan culture! Thanks to him, I have learned many things and aspects of this beautiful country that I did not know before...
In the last three days he has showed me the different neighborhoods of the city and taken me up the hill from where you can appreciate the view of the bay and the massive port; we've stroll the endless seaside boardwalk (La Rambla); he made me taste the inevitable infusion of yerba mate and the local cuisine at the Mercado del Puerto; we had coffee at Benedetti's table; he introduced me to his friends and his lovely girlfriend Valentina... and we even went to a basketball game of his team, the Unión Atlética! It is true that they eventually lost after a close game and Emiliano was really mad, but I had a lot of fun...
