ARGENTINA - El Calafate

He vuelto a El Calafate y echo de menos a mis amigos Jenny y Loïc, con los que pasé unos días increíbles aquí hace dos años… y aunque en su día me impresionó muchísimo, no quiero repetir la excursión al glaciar Perito Moreno… pero estando en pleno Parque Nacional de los Glaciares, no puedo desaprovechar la oportunidad, así que me decido por una excursión de un día al Chalten, para visitar el glaciar Viedma.

El Chalten es el pueblo más cercano , pero está a 230 Kms recorriendo la mítica Ruta 40, (el tramo de la Panamericana que atraviesa 6.000 Kms en Argentina). De camino paramos en la posada La Leona, donde en su día se alojaron Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kidd y Etta Place en su huída de la justicia. El lugar es curiosísimo.

Y por primera vez en años, el frente del Viedma se ha roto formando inmensos icebergs que flotan en el  lago y el barco se acerca tanto que podemos casi tocarlos. Ya sobre el glaciar y con los crampones puestos, nos damos un paseo de dos horas internándonos en el hielo, con sus enormes grietas y sus formaciones imposibles… para terminar tomándonos un Baileys con hielo de 400 años de antigüedad… ¡¡Genial!!

I've just returned to El Calafate and I miss my friends Jenny and Loïc, with whom I spent incredible days here two years ago... and although at that time I was very impressed, I didn’t want to repeat the excursion to the Perito Moreno glacier... but being in the middle of the Glaciers National Park, I can’t pass up the opportunity, so I decide to take a day trip to El Chalten, to visit the Viedma glacier.

El Chalten is the nearest town, but it is 230 Kms away, driving on the legendary Route 40, (the section of the Panamerican road of 6,000 km crossing Argentina). On our way we stopped at the inn La Leona, where they stayed Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kidd and Etta Place on their run from justice. The place is very curious.

And for the first time in years, the front line of the Viedma has been broken, forming huge icebergs floating in the lake and the boat was so close we can almost touch them. Once on the glacier with crampons, we take a two-hour walk deep into the ice, with huge cracks and impossible formations... to finish drinking Baileys with 400 years old ice... Just great!
