ARGENTINA - Buenos Aires V

----------------------------

The title of this post should be: "My last night in South America or How to turn a good plan into an amazing reality". Never in my wildest dreams I expected to close my trip dancing until dawn on a terrace by the beach and surrounded by beauties...!

I wanted to give everything on my last night in South America so I exhausted my artillery on messages by email, Facebook, WhatsApp and SMS to all my friends in Buenos Aires... But considering the dates (last day of work before the holidays: here Christmas gets together with the summer break!!), they were all absent, packing their bags or just dead from the last working effort... Except Lola and Mike! (My second American friend living in this city...).

After a delicious pizza and the first daiquiris at the “Grand Danzon”, we try another bar and Lola leaves us... but the music isn't good and there are 10 guys for every girl... And when I lose hope for a great farewell, Mike proposes to join the party of his girlfriend in Terrazas del Este...

His girlfriend’s name is “Milagros” ("Miracles") and that should already have given me some hints... But she welcomes us with her beautiful friends and takes us into a huge "boliche" (disco) ending with a large terrace overlooking the sea/river... Surrounded by women who should be in the 2013 Pirelli Calendar, I feel like a football player in the biggest VIP-Room of my life and I can’t help telling Mike: "I really do not know if we are in Heaven or in Hell..!!".

ARGENTINA -Buenos Aires IV

--------------------------

I decided to take my last week in Buenos Aires to enjoy the various districts of this wonderful city and take the time to see my friends...

So after walking around San Telmo and Palermo, on Wednesday it was the turn to Puerto Madero, (the fashion district around the rehabilitated old docks, with the most expensive restaurants and apartments), where I had lunch with my Dutch friend Yvonne and her two friends... And despite the huge lunch (free buffet Argentinian grill!), I met at night my friend Caroline, her sister and a Belgian friend for a big sushi dinner... ;-))

I was around Centro and Recoleta on Thursday, where I spent a good time in the wonderful bookstore the Ateneo (in an old theater, it’s the most beautiful bookshop I’ve ever been in my life) and then at night, I went out to dinner and take drinks with my friend Santi and his wife Paula, and my French friend Emilie and her boyfriend Sebastian. It was a lovely evening and I hadn’t seen Emilie in four years, so the reunion in Buenos Aires was great...!

And finally, on Friday I managed to visit the city of Tigre, with its beautiful canals and houses on the islands that form the rivers of the Delta... From the wooden small huts, to the impressive huge houses of local millionaires, all of them have their own docks and boats to move around... it’s a really lovely place...

ARGENTINA - Buenos Aires III

---------------------------

Yesterday I took a tour of San Telmo, after my failed attempt on Sunday by the rain... It is a beautiful neighborhood and I love the atmosphere, but on Monday it has nothing to do with the animation that you find in a fair day, when all the streets are full of artists, antiques sellers, music bands, couples dancing tango and all kinds of people…

At night I was invited at my friend Santi’s place, and I finally met his lovely wife, Paula... And among Malbecs, Cabernet Sauvignons and Fernet-colas, the night passed too quickly again...

And today I could not resist it and I've already come to Palermo, walking around the neighborhood and admiring the beautiful houses and sophisticated boutiques... It is not normal. This country is not normal: sitting on a terrace in Palermo is like attending a fashion-show of super models, but in the street... You don’t know where to look to avoid falling in love every 5 minutes!

ARGENTINA - Buenos Aires II

--------------------------------

I wanted to spend the last week of my trip in Buenos Aires, enjoying the city and seeing my friends... So after a brief stay in Montevideo, where I visited the few things that I had left (though really small, I loved the museum dedicated to the artist Torres García!), and had a last dinner with Emiliano, I took again the ferry to cross the Rio de la Plata.

On Saturday, as soon as I left my stuff, I crossed the whole city to go to the launch party for a brand of beer created by my friend Lola and two of her friends... in the 13th floor of a tower with amazing views. We had to vote for the best, but they were so good that I liked them all! (…I’m talking about the beers!!). I left the party at 2, but as I wasn’t that tired and it was quite close to my house, I ended up drinking daiquiris at the bar of my friend Mike...

And thank goodness, because Sunday was raining so hard that I could not do anything until the evening, when I went to the cinema (I saw "7 Days in Havana" and I liked it!) and then to dinner and local bars with Mike… and we ended up again at 2am talking about everything...

ARGENTINA - Buenos Aires

------------------------------

My original plan was to fly from El Calafate to Montevideo, but as Aerolineas Argentinas is a mess and it’s always complicated, so I decided to spend the weekend in Buenos Aires with my friend Pol, before he goes on vacation...

Already the first night we were talking until 3 in the morning, so we took it easy on Saturday, because that night there was a “milonga” (tango ball) in the north of the city, with a dance show by some friends of Pol who are professional tango dancers.

The Sunderland Club is a mythical place, one of the cathedrals of the tango, so our maximum surprise is to discover that it is actually in a local gym, which at night becomes a ballroom! The acoustics are terrible, the lights annoying, the chairs and tables are plastic like at the beach... but the atmosphere is great, the people (of all ages) is fancy dressed to party, the waiters are uniformed like in the old days and there come together many of the best tango dancers of Buenos Aires... the mix is very curious!

The other thing I discover is the schedule: we arrived at 10:30 and we were told it was too soon (Pol's friends would not arrive until 12:00), so in the company of other friends, Pato and Coco, we enjoyed the milonga awaiting the show... that does not start until 2:00 in the morning! Conclusion: we were back at 4:00 and I slept two hours before taking my boat to Montevideo, but the experience was really authentic...

ARGENTINA - El Calafate

¡¡Genial!!
------------------------

I've just returned to El Calafate and I miss my friends Jenny and Loïc, with whom I spent incredible days here two years ago... and although at that time I was very impressed, I didn’t want to repeat the excursion to the Perito Moreno glacier... but being in the middle of the Glaciers National Park, I can’t pass up the opportunity, so I decide to take a day trip to El Chalten, to visit the Viedma glacier.

El Chalten is the nearest town, but it is 230 Kms away, driving on the legendary Route 40, (the section of the Panamerican road of 6,000 km crossing Argentina). On our way we stopped at the inn La Leona, where they stayed Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kidd and Etta Place on their run from justice. The place is very curious.

And for the first time in years, the front line of the Viedma has been broken, forming huge icebergs floating in the lake and the boat was so close we can almost touch them. Once on the glacier with crampons, we take a two-hour walk deep into the ice, with huge cracks and impossible formations... to finish drinking Baileys with 400 years old ice... Just great!

ARGENTINA - Mendoza

---------------------------
When I was in Argentina two years ago I could not visit Mendoza and the wine region, so now I really wanted to go and meet the charms of this city, famous for its fine wines and the beauty of its women... Now I can say that neither disappointed! ;-)

The hostel Damajuana and its garden with pool are beautiful, but as soon as I arrived on the night bus and left my stuff in the bedroom, I joined the first tour of the vineyards that started in an hour... Actually, it’s not a "tour": they rent you the bikes, providing a map to visit the wineries. The surprise was to find Rachel (the English girl I’ve been meeting regularly since Peru) and then with Miriam, (the German girl from my hostel) we decided to spend the day together, enjoying the delicious local wines and beautiful countryside, vineyards and fields of olive trees in the sun...

The other aspects that make Mendoza famous are its nightlife and women, so after spending the morning walking around the city (two strong earthquakes have destroyed its historic center, but it is still full of beautiful squares, avenues and parks), and the afternoon enjoying the pool, we gathered an international "Dream Team" in our hostel, consisting of Rachel (England), Miriam (Germany), Mike (USA), Jess (Australia), Carolina (Brazil), Oriol (Barcelona) and I, to enjoy a long Mendoza night... We all had to get up early the next day, but that didn’t stop us from going back to bed at 6 in the morning...

-------------------------
Since, at the beginning of my trip, I met my Argentinean friends in Tayrona (Colombia), coming to the city of Cordoba was a must! And considering that my mother's family comes from Cordoba (Spain) I was curious to see how it was the Argentinean version!

Cordoba is a very nice city, with large squares and parks… but full of temptations: nice restaurants, delicious pastries and ice creams... and beautiful women!! It's a university town, so the streets are full of young people and the nightlife is famous throughout Argentina…

I wanted to be here on a weekend and I couldn’t make it, but I did not care, because only the welcoming committee of my friends Lu, Martina, Anita and Ami already deserved every kilometer in the world!! They are excellent hosts and from the beginning they wanted that I loved Cordoba, so they treated me like a prince, showing me the city, inviting me to dinner, taking me to bars and making me feel a real privileged!! It was reeeeally hard to leave again… ;-))

ARGENTINA - Salta y Cafayate

----------------------------------
After the adventure of the 21 hours of bus, I was a zombie when I got to Salta, but I still managed to see in the day the main tourist attractions of the city and even take the gondola to the Cerro San Bernardo, to see it from above... Salta is a very nice city and being now in Argentina, we could not resist the incredible meat proposed by their restaurants!!

The next day, I took the first available bus to Cafayate and I spent the afternoon with the two English of my hostel, tasting wines in three of the many cellars of the town... and the famous ice cream of Torrontés wine at the Heladería Miranda!

As I wanted to travel the following night, I made a small trek in the Quebrada de las Conchas in the morning before taking the bus. It is a spectacular valley with red soil formations and the strata of thousands of years that give it beautiful colors... and the erosion has created spectacular canyons and amazing forms!
