COLOMBIA - Cali

I leave Colombia with the frustration of not having lived its lively nightlife. After passing through Cartagena and Medellin without having danced a single song of vallenato or cumbia, I thought I would at least enjoy my last night in the Colombian capital of salsa, Cali. Unfortunately I found out that on Sundays it is as dead as the rest of the world... I have seen the potential of the locals open to the street with Latin music at an incredibly loud volume, but they were as empty and dark as their streets...

At least the day was not lost, because this morning I visited in Salento the coffee plantation of Tim Edwards and it was one of the best times I've had in Colombia. The English guy is the owner (together with his Colombian wife) of the hostel I was staying at these days, "Plantation House". He's a real character who became a coffee producer five years ago and besides being a really curious man who tells very interesting stories, he is hilarious and has an incredible sense of humor... the visit and its explanation have lasted nearly three hours and in the end it was him who took me to the bus station in Armenia so I could go to Cali...

There you have some photos of his coffee plantation and the pineapples and fruits he’s also growing.

-------------------------------------

Yesterday I was most of the day on the bus to get from Medellin to the Coffee region, but the mountain landscape was spectacular and the village I reached was one the most beautiful things I've seen in Colombia. Salento has only one main square (with its inevitable church) and four streets (one commercial) but is really charming and is surrounded by breathtaking views.

It is in the heart of the Coffee region and the entrance to Cocora Valley, which is what I have visited this morning. I had to get up again at 6:30 but I do not regret it at all because it was really wonderful and if I had gone later, the famous fog that always covers the valley wouldn’t have let me see much of the landscape...
I spent the day with the English boy that shares my room in the hostel, Rowan (eve though unknowingly I called him the whole day "Robin"!) and the people we met along the way (French, Kiwis, Colombians, Spanish...). It was a march of three hours, but the landscape was so beautiful that we decided to enjoy the views, the hummingbirds, the wax palm trees... and we spent five hours in the park!

--------------------------------------------------

In the end I didn’t appreciate much the Flower Festival in Medellin, except for the fact that it was more difficult to find a hostel and that prices were more expensive... I missed by one day the famous flower parade and I've hardly seen some virgins withered...

These past days I have heard a lot of Medellin, the friendliness of its people (paisas), their women (ideal of beauty for Colombians), their quality of life and animation at night ... In just 24 hours in the city I haven’t seen much of that (the people are lovely as in the rest of Colombia, but their women have surprised me more on the contrary...), but I was very impressed by its geography (in a valley surrounded by mountains), its nice squares (Plaza Botero, with his 23 sculptures is beautiful), the modern Biblioteca España and the metro-cable, which crosses the favelas (shanty towns) as an icon of modernity in the midst of poverty...and takes you to a natural park 5 minutes away from the city!

I was going to meet Felipe (one of Juanca’s the friends’ I met in Bogotá) for a beer, but he ended up taking me to a working dinner with his clients from the financial sector. Considering it was a working dinner, I laughed a lot, learned much about Colombia (and the world in general) and had a great time... and they ended up inviting me! Amazing...

---------------------------
Short technical note: my best pictures from Tayrona and Cartagena are vertical, but the system doesn't recognise them as such and puts them horizontal, so I couldn't include them. Now that I have a good connexion in Medellin, I'll try to upload the albums!

COLOMBIA - Cartagena (Cont.)

----------------------------------------------
In the end I decided to prolong my stay two nights in Cartagena, because I needed some rest and this city is perfect to enjoy some quiet days... And still it’s famous for its nightlife!

After an early morning dedicated to organizing my next destinations, hostels, flights, downloading photos and answering emails, I spent the afternoon wandering around the historic center and ended up having dinner with Merche (the girl from Seville I met in Taganga) and her local friends. There was a  very curious collective session of "zumba" and choreography organised every Sunday by a French lady in the Plaza Trinindad. It is filled with people of all ages (including a large group of children) dancing for hours…

Yesterday I decided to spend the day in theexcursion to Rosario Islands and go to Playa Blanca, the beach everyone I had told me very well about. It is an archipelago close to Cartagena of beautiful mangrove islands and white beaches, but the tour itself was the most disappointing... I spent the day stuck in a boat with 200 people and they left us a couple of hours in a overcrowded beach full of bars concentrated in a strip five metres wide and unable to get into the island because it was private property...

When I returned at last to the hostel, I went to the cinema to see The Dictator and I laughed out loud. Today I leave the Caribbean and fly to Medellin, where they are currently at the Flower Festival. We'll see how’s the town!

COLOMBIA - Cartagena

------------------------------------
After getting up at 6:30, three hours uphill dehydrated and the five hour bus ride between Santa Marta and Cartagena, I thought that it would not be able to go out at night... but after a dinner with the small group of Argentines (enlarged by two girls from the hostel in Cartagena and Lola, who I met in Taganga) motivated me to go to some friends’ place for a drink.

What we thought would be quiet drinks in a small apartment, turned out to be a full party, with the homeowner as professional DJ (much better than DJs I've had lately in Paris and Madrid!), and in a duplex overlooking the bay and Boca Grande!

With such a fantastic atmosphere and dancing, my fatigue was soon gone, but still, we came back at a reasonable hour about 3 am...

I have spent the day exploring the city of Cartagena on a tourist tour that I everyone recommended... I'm not much keen to such things, but the truth is that it was super interesting and I loved it. I spent much of the day on that but the guides were very good and I learned many things by visiting Boca Grande, the monastery of La Popa, the Castle of San Felipe and the old city... It is really beautiful and I understand why it is considered the jewel of Colombia!

COLOMBIA - Parque Tayrona

-----------------------------------------------

My plan was to spend a night in Tayrona Park, but the park kepers wanted to make it two. At least, the second night I slept in paradise, but it wasn’t worth the adventure...

The Tayrona is a wonder of jungle mountains and beautiful beaches that Colombian environmentalists have managed to maintain fairly protected from mass tourism. One sleeps in hammocks or tents, and there is no electricity. I arrived with a Spanish (Merche) and an Argentinian (Lola) that I met at the hostel in Taganga and that night I already spent it with a group of four Argentinians from Cordoba (Lucia, Luciana, Ana and Martina) and a Panaman (Cristian): all great people! The night in the moonlit beach and the laughs listening to music are priceless...

The next day, I wanted to make the trek to the indian settlement of Pueblito and get out by the other entrance to the park, but it seems that in that entry the payment and park access is not contolled, so the keepers do not want the tourists to use that route and it is not signed! As I could not risk getting lost in the jungle, I had to deviate almost 2 hours to Playa Brava and sleep there. It was a wild beach where there was only a small group of two English, one American and one South African, who pitying me, gave me for dinner a can of tuna they had left.

The way back up the mountain for 3 hours, more than 30 degrees, almost without having eaten in 24 hours and without water was hellish enough to satisfy my hunger of jungle and trekking for a while.

COLOMBIA - Taganga

--------------------------------------------

My resting day in Santa Marta was necessary, but the city has nothing to see, so I've come to the small fishing village of Taganga and I’ve spent the afternoon diving... It was only a 20 minute trip, but the minibus “colectivo” with the extremely loud latin music coming from the 4 speakers and the guy holding the door that was broken on he road are worth a picture…

I've been lucky enough to find a company that agreed to go sailing with only two people, so I spent a great afternoon with the Colombian instructor, Javier and my dive partner, a girl from New York called Elize!
They were both lovely and very interesting people, the day was beautiful and we had two very nice dives on the island opposite the park Tayrona, so I can’t complain of the day ... The visibility wasn’t perfect and we didn’t manage to see the giant turtle they saw the morning, but I am fine with the huge barracuda, corals and beautiful fish that we saw in the afternoon!

COLOMBIA - Reflexiones / Thoughts

----------------------------------------------
After 10 days in Colombia, here there are some additional thoughs I couldn’t include in my previous posts:

1.    The most successful business in Bogotá are the photocopies and printing shops. There are even more than boulangeries in Paris, and that’s quite a record! You may find one in every corner and there are streets only dedicated to that. Either this people don’t print a heir homes or there is a business opportunity we haven’t seen in Europe! The second type is the credit for mobiles. Everybody will charge mobiles: from the lottery seller on the street, to the fruit shop or the hair-dresser.

2.    Since I landed in Bogotá, being on holidays I wake up every day between 7 and 7:30. That’s way much earier than my normal schedule for work. I don’t know if it’s the light or the rhythm here but my boss Julie would be very proud of my progress…

3.    Everyody tells you that the people here are really nice and gentle but until you actually live it you can’t have a real idea. Every day I have examples of people helping with good practical advice and suggestions. Last Sunday, getting off the bus, the wife of the bus driver ended up giving me two blessed small medals of saints to protect me during my trip…

-------------------------------------------------

I promised to avoid becoming philosphical in my blog, but following my first experience of 17 hours in a bus driving at night in a mountain road, swinging in close curves of 180 degrees, overtaking trucks, and the void on my right, I had to reconsider my values…

I previously thought that the highest risks in my trip were being stolen or having an accident/sickness that could stop my trip. Now I know I was wrong. My biggest risk is dying sleeping in a bus!! ;-)) I don’t consider myself often scared and everybody knows I can sleep anywere under any condition but for a few hours I was incapable. At least the landscape was breathtaking...

After such an experience, I fully understood the high religious fever of this region… For a few hours, the bus driver was God for me. I saw death very, very close and he saved me. I think my life will never be the same after this mystic  experience!! ;-))

I had to sacrifice the Canyon of Chicamocha and a few colonial villages in the mountains but I’m already in the Caribbean Coast. The youth hostel in Santa Marta is like a super cool hippie paradise, but I just moved from the cold and rain of the mountains to the suffocating heat in less than 24h.

----------------------------------------------------
After my great weekend and Juanca’s country house, mi “solo”trip starts. It’s been a wonderful week, in which I really felt at home and supported by my friends. It’s been really useful to organise the rest of my trip in Colombia and the few last stuff I couldn’t do in Madrid…

As It kept raining outside and it was cold, the weekend was mainly eating, drinking, sleeping and chatting at the fireplace with Juanca´s gang from school. The house was beautiful and all over the weekend around 15 people passed by, so it was very funny… really nice people, with very interesting and various profiles, but above all, very very funny, because they have accumulaed anecdotes since primary school!!

They dropped me today on the road to the North and I spent the rest of the day in the beautiful colonial town Villa de Leyva, (declared national heritage).

-------------------------------------------------------

I spent yesterday and today enjoying Bogotá and seeing my friends before leaving for the weekend at Juanca’s country house…

I began the day at the Museo Botero (I loved the aquarels and still-lives in pastel, together with his sense of humour), then lunch with my friends and “visit” to the ice-cream shop of Anamita, before going up to the mount Monserrate to enjoy the amazing view of the city. And in the evening, dinner at Juanma’s place with his friends from the Uni! A full day indeed… ;-))

This morning I only went to the National Museum to try to learn a bit more from this country and “refresh” my knowledge from school regarding the conquest of America by our spaniard ancestors… we weren’t angels…

I’ll be at the country house on the weekend before heading to the North and the caribbean coast, so bye, bye internet till Monday!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

First change in plans from the original itinerary: instead of 3 days in Bogotá before leving to the North, I’ll be here one week! My friends and the multiple choices of nice places close by have made me reconsider my rithm of narrow-minded turist… ;-))

It’s been a very nice day, with the excursion to the Cathedral of Salt in Zipaquirá in the morning and the good convesations with friends in the afternoon. The mine of salt turned into a religious monument is really impressive. It’s an almost two hours trip to get there, but a monumental wonder of mining and the work of humankind.

In the afternoon, a good coffee with Anamita and dinner with Fede in the singular restaurant Andrés Carne de Res, a real institution in Colombia.
